Gov. Shumlin recently signed a broad renewable energy bill – one of VNRC’s 2015 legislative priorities – that will require electric utilities get a certain amount of energy from renewable sources, with amounts ramping up over time. The legislation, which is expected to create some 1,000 new jobs, also specifically encourages the creation of more community-scale, distributed electricity generation. The bill also has an innovative provision to help energy customers move off of fossil fuels through building weatherization, promoting efficient wood heat and cold-climate heat pumps, and increasing transportation efficiency.
