Recently, Gov. Shumlin signed positive legislation that will expand the availability net metering in Vermont. The legislation is designed to allow more Vermonters to install solar energy systems at their homes, businesses and schools and feed extra electricity back onto the grid. VNRC strongly supported the passage of the bill, including a provision to encourage installing solar energy generation projects on capped landfills. According to the Vermont Public Service Department, there has been significant growth in the program in recent years. Since the start of 2011, net metering capacity has roughly tripled from about 12 megawatts to about 37 megawatts.
