On Friday, October 7, VNRC will host an opening reception for Karen Schaefer, our Artist in Residence from October through December. Schaefer’s exhibit, “The Liminal Season”, a collection of oil and mixed media paintings on canvas and paper that explore the transitional time between late season sunflowers and early snowfall in our landscapes. Doors will be open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 pm to coincide with Montpelier Art Walk. Additional visiting hours for the exhibit can be found here.
Karen will join us to discuss the methods and inspiration behind her art. As she so eloquently writes:
Autumn in Vermont: that transitional time between late season sunflowers and early snowfall. For a few weeks leaf peepers marvel as our maples and oaks put on a show, but the party doesn’t end when the leaves float to the ground and the tourists drive away. The yellowy orange landscape gently downshifts into its color complement, violet blue. Summer’s detail-oriented, velvety flower petals slowly give way to abstracted shapes under thick blankets of frost. This collection of paintings on canvas and paper explores what I value most about the liminal season: quiet.

Although we are booked through March 2023, VNRC continues to seek out local artists whose work connects with or complements our mission to protect and enhance our natural environments and wildlife, vibrant communities, productive working landscapes, rural character and unique sense of place.
