Vermonters face significant and complex challenges, from pandemic recovery to climate adaptation. At the same time, there are enormous opportunities to strengthen our communities, protect our environment, and care for our neighbors.
The recently released Vermont Climate Action Plan details the initial action steps needed to reach the State’s goals to address climate change. The Plan identifies smart growth strategies as critical and intrinsically tied to both reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening the resilience of our historic town centers.
To help build momentum toward meaningful climate action and smart community growth, the Small Grants for Smart Growth program is launching its second competitive grant round to offer one grant of up to $5,000 for a community-driven project involving affordable housing, sustainable transportation or climate resilience that meet smart growth guidelines and is aligned with the Vermont Climate Action Plan recommendations.
For instance:
- Is your community trying to develop strategies for integrating affordable housing into downtowns or other growth areas?
- What creative options for rural transportation is your community exploring?
- Do you need to engage community members to identify preferred sites for renewable energy as part of updating your Town Plan?
