On Friday, October 2nd, VNRC will be hosting our closing reception for “Vermont Light”, an exhibit by artist Phil Laughlin of Williston. A lifelong artist, Phil discovered the rich tradition of New England oil painting after moving to Vermont in 1986. His landscapes balance illumination and shadow to create new interpretations of local scenes.
“If there ever was a painters paradise… New England is it! Within this relatively small region there is an inspiring range of places and spaces, each with its own unique identity. Zoom in to specific sites or take a step back and enjoy the grand sweep of mountains and shores.
Inland, lofty granite peaks stand in dramatic contrast to broad sandy beaches along the coast. In between there are farms, fields, settlements, roads, waterways etc. All of this thrives under the gorgeous mantle of sunlit skies, enhanced by changes of season. Whether it’s spring greens, fall colors or pristine winter snowfall there’s sure to be a mood to please everyone.
From an artist’s point of view, inspirational painting subjects seem endless. Step outside in the morning and the light is shifting, the season is advancing, the influence of weather is changing, all working to keep it fresh.”
Although he has worked with many mediums over the years, all of the pieces on display at VNRC employ water soluble oils on canvas. According to the artist, oils allow for a more comprehensive exploration of color and composition, enabling the viewer to see the subtleties of our natural world that we so easily pass by every day. Doors will be open to the public between 4:30 and 7:30 pm. Phil will be on site to discuss the technique and inspiration behind his work. Light refreshments, including homemade baked goods, will be served while supplies last.
