Transportation Enhancement Program on the Block
The Vermont Agency of Transportation is proposing an indefinite moratorium on the Vermont Transportation Enhancement Program, which provides a critical source of funding for communities to construct sidewalks and bike paths. Due to last year’s elimination of the bike and pedestrian program, the Transportation Enhancement Program is even more important to communities seeking to create transportation alternatives for local residents. Cutting the Enhancement Program will not ease Vermont’s financial crisis, as these dollars are 100% federal money and cannot be used for other purposes. These projects are generally completed in one to three years, providing immediate economic stimulus as well as leveraging additional funds. Smart Growth Vermont is working with other members of the Smart Growth Collaborative to ensure that these funds continue to be available to local communities.
