Global Climate Change

A warming and increasingly unstable climate is threatening our future both globally and right here in Vermont. Central to VNRC’s energy program is advocating that Vermont do its part to reduce its contribution to climate change. That’s why VNRC works across all energy sectors — energy use, energy generation, transportation and land use — to promote solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

While an across-the-board approach is important, approximately 78 percent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy used for heating and transportation. In 2010, for example, heating buildings accounted for 47 percent of Vermont’s greenhouse gas emissions and transportation accounted for 31.6 percent. These are areas where VNRC is putting increasing focus.
