Downtown Investments and Funding Create Jobs
Our legislative partner, Preservation Trust of Vermont, has taken the lead in calling for an increase in the amount of funding for tax credits available to help landowners in downtowns and village centers. These tax credits help property owners make safety upgrades and facade improvements on historic structures. There is a list of projects ready to go that were not funded in the last round. Tax credits leverage millions of dollars in private investment in our town centers. As a result, new economic opportunities, jobs, and housing units are created.
Preservation Trust of Vermont has also worked with communities around the state to develop a list of over $27 million in “shovel ready” projects owned by non-profits and communities to encourage the Legislature to increase funding for the grant programs administered by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. These projects not only create jobs and utilize local materials, but also support historic preservation and smart growth policies.
These issues will be (or in some cases already have been) taken up by House Institutions and Corrections, Senate Institutions, Senate Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs. Please contact your representatives to ask them to support these critical investments in our downtowns and village centers.
