Dam safety bill (H.554) passes Vermont House

On Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, H.554, the Dam Safety bill championed by VNRC passed the Vermont House of Representatives. This bill was developed collaboratively with the Vermont Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Vermont Trout Unlimited, the Vermont Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and other partners. The bill addresses gaps in inspection requirements for hundreds of small dams. Under the bill, DEC will be required to maintain an inventory of all dams in the state and develop rules that will require all dams to be regularly inspected. Now that the bill has passed the House, it will move on to the Vermont State Senate, first to the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee. Stay tuned for updates as the process continues!
